Celebration of 100 Year Anniversary, College of Marin, Professor Paul da Silva

The Evolution of Soundness: Ecology in the College and the County, 1926-2026

Let us honor the achievements of the College of Marin from the perspective of a dedicated and distinguished professor and member of the College's Board of Trustees. A rare opportunity.

“Ecology” was not in the vocabulary of most people one hundred years ago. To a great extent, it became widely known in Marin due to the activities of faculty and students at the College of Marin. The first part of this presentation will summarize some of their contributions over the last century, while the second part will review current efforts to make COM’s two campuses models of ecologically sound practice.

This project focuses on the removal of invasive, unhealthy, and dead vegetation to reduce wildfire risk near homes. Participants will be able to talk to fire professionals and land managers about the impact of consistent risk reduction work over multiple years, ask questions about fire history on the hill and the role of fuel breaks, and learn about future expansions of the project, the strategies and tactics used to carry out the current work, and the plan for safe pile burning of debris.
